For the well-focused mama.

I am really struggling to build my portfolio, since, if you can imagine it- no one wants a wedding photographer who doesn't have much wedding experience. I'd be more than happy to work for free or as a second shooter if I was allowed to use those images in my portfolio. I just feel like if I could get my foot in the door, maybe I could make a go at this whole photographer thing and actually have a little bit of money to fund my lens addiction. A girl can dream, right?

Anyway, I am brainstorming some ideas of ways to shoot weddings. I've even thought about making my brother and his girlfriend dress up in a wedding dress and suit and doing shots of them! Here's what I got so far; any comments?

*Contact florists and bakeries; offer to photograph their flowers and cakes for free before they are picked up by brides. They get professional images to show other brides, I get detail shots for my portfolio.
*Post a "will work for cake: buttercream frosting preferred" post on craigslist. Maybe some poor, last-minute bride is looking for a nice cheap/free photographer.
*Troll the wedding forums online and on LJ offering (begging?) to work as a second shooter.

Any other ideas on ways to just get that foot in the door? If I want to keep spending money on my photo habit, the truth is, I am going to have to start making some of it. Plus, my kids will go on strike if I stick that lens in their faces one.more.time.

My sister is getting married in October...a ways away, yeah, but I can ask her if she'd mind you coming as a second shooter. It's in um, Brooklyn I think.

And hey, if you want to rv down to Key West with us in April 2007, I KNOW my best friend woulnd't mind a second shooter at her wedding.

Your ideas are good ones, all of them. I can't see anyone, florist or brides turning down free photographs.

I think craigslist is a fabulous idea-- I'm sure you'd get a lot of takers, especially if you offer to act as a second shooter, even if they've already hired someone else. I imagine you're going to get more offers than you know what to do with, actually.

go to some quality photo finishing places (as in not walmart, lol) and ask them if you can leave some cards, let them know you are looking to build up your wedding portfolio and if anyone comes in in a last minute bind for a photographer or really short on money that you would appreciate them giving out your card.

I have gotten SO much business from my cards being at a photo place since people are there talking...PICTURES!

I like the offer on craigs list, that sounds like a great idea.

now is the time to get on it.

I had a girl today call me for august 12...that day has been booked forever and people still keep calling about august weddings.
I wish you lived here, I would have suggested you.

oh, and what about the gfirl you photoshop for? can you ask her if you can shadow and get some great shots for yourself?

Good idea- offering to go with that photog. It would be a selling point for her too, I'd think.
